Worthy of a “Comrade”…and a “Friend” as well
About me, and a friend named Mafe
by Jose Paulo Gaborni
Originally, I want to tell something about the “other one”, but instead, I chose a different person-who is nice and made me happy as a friend.
It was in 2008 when I met her in Plaza Miranda during a rally. She was wearing her AB uniform plus a yellow head band on her hair during that time, and looking at her makes me feel blush, especially in the middle of the meeting with my fellow comrades on that event(since both of us are activists, and participating in a meeting is a part of our mass work).
But as time goes by, we became close to each other. Once she even gave me 20 pesos for my pamasahe, while I afford her, and her friends to eat in a sisigan (a restaurant with sisig as their main specialty) at Lerma. She really made me feel happy and inspired to do mass work as an activist-yet difficult to say how much I like her.
Most of my activist friends knew that I like Mafe (her nickname), they even told me to “woo” her, to have a program yet still I can’t do so-“Dahil ayokong masaktan” (For I don’t like to get hurt), as well as being busy at that time.
I became her confidant, and despite being with her boyfriend, also an activist, I still afford to join with her (just like any other activist) in teach-ins, rallies, that I even talk with her boyfriend and once gave money for his pamasahe, it still shows that we’re still friends so is our collectives at that time.
Nowadays, she’s working in an NGO (Non-Government Organization) after graduation last year (she finished AB communication arts in UST), I haven’t talk to her after May 2010, but still maintaining contacts, so are my friends as well as her’s.
Honestly, I still like her. I even made some drawing, poetry, and even a children’s story based on her; but despite these, we rather stay as friends, comrades after 3 years of each other, just like others in the University belt.
“Keep us in beauty,
And truth and virtues impassioned embrace;
Ever your valiant legions,
Imbued with unending grace…”
Sorry to write it all, for it made me wept a bit.
